Ethiopia Sanitary Phytosanitary Livestock Meat Marketing (SPS/LMM)

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Made possible through a cooperative agreement with USAID.

Partnership with Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MoARD), Ethiopian Institute for Agricultural Research (EIAR), and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI).

The Ethiopian Sanitary and Phytosanitary Standards and Livestock and Meat Marketing Program (SPS-LMM) is funded by USAID to serve a national mandate for increasing exports from cattle, sheep, and goats from crop-livestock systems in the highlands as wel as from pastroal systems in the lowlands. SPS-LMM began in January 2006 and has been working to realize benefits such as market-led economic growth, poverty reduction and improved livelihoods for Ethiopian livestock producers.

The government of Ethiopia gives priority to increasing meat exports in order to capture the added value from hides, byproducts and job creation. Therefore, SPS-LMM primarily focuses on meat exports although SPS and market development also benefit live animal exports.
